O'Neil was a contestant on her third series of Canadian Idol in the early stages of 2005 when she was still in high school. Her vocal performance impressed the judges, and so she received a promotion to the final 100th stage. O'Neil was praised by the jury. However, she was a major loser in both the top 10 Week and Top 9 Week of the Finals. This shocked the judges, and they recommended that people vote for Melissa who was the contestant with the best ability to sing. O'Neil's performances were such awe-inspiring that she never placed in the third place in the future. O'Neil's performance on September 7 in 2005 was such a dazzling performance that the judge Werner predicted the newspaper headlines. O'Neil beat Rex Goudie to become the third Canadian Idol. O'Neil was immediately congratulated by Canadian PM Paul Martin for winning Canadian Idol.
